FAQs

Do I need to know how to draw?

Nope! I provide templates that you can trace over, and you are welcome to find/bring designs to trace and transfer.

I've had many students bring in photos on their phones or printed out. I also encourage simple designs to start with!

Is block printing difficult or dangerous?

Just like any new medium, it may feel challenging initially, but most folks find that the actual process of carving into the material is not as difficult as they initially thought. That said, it will take time and patience! As you will be using a sharp tools, we'll go over best practices to limit potential injury.

What will I be carving out of?

We will be carving out of 4"x6" rubber blocks. I have found that they are the most accessible for beginners, and I personally prefer them over linoleum.

What should I wear?

Wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty! We will be using water-soluble inks, which will wash out when wet, but not when dry. Aprons will also be provided!

How long are classes?

My regular classes at Studio Piano Nobile are 3 hours long. Corporate and private classes can vary depending on needs, but are generally an hour shorter.

2-3 hours allows for enough time to carve carefully and experiment with inks without rushing!

Are your classes kid-friendly?

Because block printing involves sharp tools, students need to be at least 13 years old to participate.
